Orangeries and Sunrooms

Our Orangery designs represent the very best in light enhancing extentions.

Orangeries.

Our traditional orangery is normally constructed with wood allowing us to really emphasize our joinery skills. We can use very fine glazing bars combined with heavier pilasters and cornice eaves feature to enhance the orangery features. This approach helps to reproduce some of the finest elements of the early classis orangery buildings. While many of our buildings could be described as contemporary orangeries we often look to the past for inspiration. Many of our embellishments have their origins in these early classic orangeries. These interesting details often represent an attractive aesthetic solution but very often there is a practical side too. Take a look at our ‘Brief history of the Orangery’ at the bottom of the page for more information on the origins and development of the modern day orangery.

Windows & vertical elements

Four or six pane georgian traditional window designs were popular in the past and are still used in modern orangeries. Gothic Lattice designs sometimes provide a fine contrast when existing features can't be successfully replicated. Margin glazing will often mask an inconsistancy when windows of different sizes need to be brought together while still maintaining the classic victorian ogangery style. Double doors can be framed with pilasters. Feature gables can be used to enhance the important entrance area of the orangery. Concertina doors can be incorporated allowing large scale access to the outdoors. Window seats, radiator covers and wainscotting can all be important details to really bring your ideas together to create a really special and unique orangery living space.

Lantern Glazing & roof

The main light source is the glazed lantern in the roof.   This is supported independently and can be made larger or smaller depending on orientation. Natural light can be maximised, but also controlled. Maintenance free materials can be used externally including cast metal cresting and ball finials. Moulded timber rafters are shown internally. Roof openings which are electrically operated can be thermostatically controlled to eliminate the danger of over heating in south or west facing aspects of the orangery.
